Common issues:
- Minor to extreme oil consumption – Unfortunately, Audi is the worst offender of all the brands we work on when it comes to oil consumption. This is largely attributed to poor internal engine design, but it is widely believe to be worsened by poor vehicle maintenance, low quality/improper oil, and certain driving conditions. Audi claims 1 quart per ~1,000 miles of oil loss is “acceptable”, though we have seen it get as bad as 1 quart per 300 miles on a newer vehicle with under 100k miles.
- EPC light, often accompanied by “limp mode” – The dreaded EPC light will occur typically once the vehicle reaches about 100+k miles. Often, the vehicle will also go into a limp mode where it does not want to go above 35mph or so; this is a sort of protective mode the vehicle puts itself into when it detects a problem. You can try turning your vehicle off and back on to see if this resets the light, however do not be surprised if the EPC light returns. No need to fret just yet, sometimes the necessary repairs are relatively minor.
- External oil and coolant leaks – The water pump on all Audi/VWs will fail before 100k miles and cause coolant loss. There is nothing you can do to prevent it, it is simply a matter of poor design/quality of parts. Other oil leaks and coolant leaks are common, most often starting around 100k miles. We often warn customers that once external leaks start, plan for further leaks as old, brittle parts subsequently fail.
