Common issues with newer BMWs:

  • Oil filter housing – This component will typically need to have its gasket replaced typically by 120k miles. We replace the oil cooler gasket at the same time as the oil cooler gasket can leak and there is labor overlap to do it at the same time.
  • “Mickey mouse”/coolant flange leak – On some models, this little plastic piece shaped in the outline of Mickey Mouse’s head is known to suddenly burst which can cause rapid coolant loss. Often these vehicles will have the oil filter housing gasket replaced before this happens which is the optimal time to upgrade the flange as there is complete labor overlap. We replace it with an aluminum fitting.
  • Thrust arm bushing failure – Thrust arms are one set of the front control arms, and the bushings tend to fail before 120k miles. Because there are ball joints at the other end of the arm, we simply replace the whole arm, not just the bushing.
  • Wheel speed sensor failure – Once a wheel speed sensor fails, it can cause the BRAKE, ABS, and traction warning lights to appear on the dash. The warnings appear because these various systems rely on a specific data set which they will not receive part of when a speed sensor fails. No worries though, it most often simply requires replacement of the wheel speed sensor.
  • Valve cover gasket leak – Valve cover gasket leaks are common with BMWs. Some models have plastic valve covers which will require the cover to be replaced as they will warp upon removal. The metal valve covers will only need the gasket replaced, though this can be quite a labor intensive job.
